A few nights ago my wife and I watched The Desolation of Smaug (a film I mostly enjoyed) and it triggered a memory from grade four, when my teacher read us The Hobbit. I loved it, just the sheer scale of the adventure! Sitting cross-legged on aging carpet as a kid, it really fired my imagination, and so I think I have Mr. Best (among others) to thank for starting me down the road to writing fantasy fiction.
And after working toward a goal for thirteen or so years, the last few weeks leading up to publication of my first novel, City of Masks, have vanished. I’m suddenly one week on the other side of the release date – thrilled, surprised, excited, happy, nervous – everything!
I’ve already had some great reviews, folks have said wonderfully nice things like:
It definitely makes the sacrifices worthwhile, to see people enjoying the story, so thank you to those who have read or even offered to read the book!
When you work full time or have other commitments, writing will obviously cut into time you might spend on other activities, like music or exercise maybe. Or cooking and even reading. Most probably, time you want to spend with loved ones. And so to my friends, family and especially my wife, I want to acknowledge how important your support has been. I’ve spent many, many, many late nights or weekends writing, striving to get better, editing, revising, checking everything again, not only on my first novel, but all my writing over the years. It means a lot and I’m really lucky. Not every writer is given such support by those around them, so I know how valuable it is.
I don’t want to give this post too much of an Oscar acceptance speech feel so I’d better wrap it up now and thank my publisher Snapping Turtle Books and the team there, for their confidence in me and their hard work, but also to everyone who offered to read City of Masks during the long drafting process, thank you again!
